What time period do you think this generation will take place in?

Post by XD375 on 2010-02-06, 22:22

In the jump from the first generation to the second generation, three years passed.

The same pattern continued in the third and fourth generations, which were respectively synonymous with the first and second.

In HeartGold/SoulSilver, a new region is referenced. It is said that this new region is the connection between Johto and Sinnoh and why both of these regions follow similar legends. It is believes that this region is based on the Tōhoku region.

If this is the case, I believe it's possible that they are keeping a trilogy of games on the DS that interconnect with one another via similar beliefs and history. If this is the case, it would not surprise me if these games took place during the same time period as Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, and SoulSilver.

The other two possibilities are that these games will either continue three years later, or that they will continue the pattern and go back three years again. If Ruby and Sapphire remakes are in the pipeline, I can see the games going back three years once more, unless of course they wish to either retcon Ruby and Sapphire's place in the timeline. The other possibility is that a single generation does not represent a certain timeline. However, I don't believe Ruby and Sapphire remakes are really needed unless of course this generation is another reboot, but being on the DS this is unlikely.

What do you guys think?

Your post was tl;dr so I merely skimmed through it, sorry if I missed something and stuff.

Generation 2 was three years later than generation 1 simply because it came out after it. It made sense at the time. I believe that the third generation was originally supposed to be later than the second, but because of the generation 1 remakes, the games were linked directly to those, making it the same time period as the first generation.

The fourth generation is about the same period as second, which was probably because of the second generation remakes. But I can't see them following this pattern. I don't think that we'll be seeing a G3 remake anytime soon. But if it did happen, then we'd be stuck in the past again. I don't think Game Freak wants that.

Your theory of the games being the same as the rest of the DS games seems plausible. The way the fourth generation threw around clues, I think there's a good chance that HG/SS will have something for us to find. I don't think that there would be an advancement in time if it's on the DS. If it is, then the whole trading system would need to be changed, which reminds me of something else. Another reason the three year gap may have happened between the first two generations was the fact that the whole "time machine" had to be set up. It didn't really make a whole lot of sense when I think about it, but it gave it a reason.

But if the game comes out on a new soon to be released Nintendo hand held (they have to be done making new DSs now. The DSi seems to be nothing more but a red herring) then I think that it's pretty possible that the fifth generation time line will be moved up, since regular trade won't be available, probably.

Also, kind of off topic, but does anyone know if the time machine is the same in HG/SS? It would be far too early to migrate, and since it's the same timeline as DPPt, it wouldn't be needed.

HG/SS uses a Pal Park the same way D/P did. I think it's obvious there they decided to put the said Pal Park.
